Walter Auer is passionate about teaching. He cares deeply about passing on knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to musicians of all ages, from pupils at music schools to professional colleagues. His method is based on his studies in musical education (specialising in the study of instrumental pedagogy), his experience of outstanding teachers (Kalckreuth, Kofler, Blau, Pahud and Nicolet) and his questioning of conventional doctrines.

With all its ups and downs, his own career has taught him that asking the right questions is frequently more important than giving out answers. In particular, the experience of learning to play a musical instrument is determined by very many different factors: It comes very close to learning a skilled craft, and a lot of time and energy has to be invested in gaining a thorough mastery of basic training. Equally important is the ability to arouse artistic curiosity, to nurture sensitivity, and last but not least, to enable artists to harness their talents and skills even when they find themselves under a great deal of pressure and difficult conditions.

Walter likes to draw many comparisons to sport. From being overweight and a heavy smoker he has now become an amateur endurance athlete (he runs in marathons and is a racing cyclist). He has learned the hard way that a healthy lifestyle has gifted him with the ability to realise his true potential.
The privilege of being able to perform music virtually every evening alongside some of the world’s most talented singers at the Vienna State Opera has been a decisive factor in the way he regards sound, colours, phrasing and musicality.

His abundant experience of playing in German and Austrian orchestras (such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, NDR Hanover Radio Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic) has enabled him to compare and appreciate all kinds of sound ideals, musical styles and orchestral structures.

Since 2012 Walter is teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna,
focusing on orchestra excerpts and audition preparing.

Since 2013 Walter Auer continues teaching the class of Wolfgang Schulz at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
